Microscopic surgery at much more precise levels is now possible thanks to a new microsurgery robot introduced in The Netherlands. The surgeon assist robot allows surgeons to suture at the tiniest of levels by giving them a steadier hand during surgical procedures.

The device, with powerful visual aid, can convert incremental movements of the surgeon's hands, scaling them down from centimeters to fractions of millimeters, creating better precision and improving surgical finesse.Source

The successful procedure sutured a lymphatic vessel on a patient suffering from Lymphedema. The results were less pain and quicker healing time for the patient. The device is from MicroSure Robotics

Robots, Americans, and Work: More Concern than Optimism

Pew research: Americans not so optimistic about work, future, and robots


Studies show some optimism mixed with growing concern 


New Pew research results show that 72% of Americans are worried about robots, automation, and technology taking their jobs. The robot enthusiasm gap exists in feelings about artificial intelligence evaluating job candidates, driverless cars, and robot caregiving, as well.  

The studies showed that 56% would not ride in a driverless car, 59% would not use a robot caregiver, and 76% would not like apply for a job that uses algorithms to evaluate them. 

Another important finding from the research shows that 85% of Americans favor Government mandates that limit robots only to jobs that are dangerous or unhealthy. Also, 61% believe Government should offer some sort of basic income to support basic needs and 58% would like to see Government limit the number of jobs technology can take over, even if it could do the work cheaper and better.   


Young more likely to be negatively impacted 


When it comes to what is happening now, in relation to jobs lost due to automation, the Pew studies found that 6% of Americans say they have either lost their job or are now underemployed due to technology. 

The young, it appears, are most susceptible to job loss due to automation. Those with a college education expressed a more favorable view of technology enhancing their professions, while non-college grads had less positive feeling about increased automation and new technology in the workforce. Source

Millennial Investment Advice Robot Style

British firm Aviva major stakeholder in Wealthify  


Robot advice start-up Wealthify offers innovative investing


Aimed at Millennial investors, Aviva of Britain hopes to provide cheap and easy investment opportunities for its customers, using robot algorithm financial advice.

It purchased holdings in robot start-up Weathify (yet another example of a big company nabbing small start-ups to enhance innovation) in the hopes that it could add a cost-effective financial service for its customers. It would also be one that adds to the changing landscape of investing and financial advice due to increased A.I.

Currently, Wealthify investors can get into the British stock market with just under a pound and a half. And robot algorithms give investors advice on where to put their money and how much, based on things like age, income, risk aversion etc.

Aviva says it will offer its customers access to Wealthify through their Aviva app that can run on an iPhone.

Most Britons, Aviva says, are woefully unprepared financially for their retirements. It hopes to alleviate that by using the technology of robot algorithms to bring more people into investing by making it cheaper and easier. Getting Millennials involved is a strategy the company hopes can change Britons mindset toward better saving and investing.

The US's BlackRock a $5.7 trillion asset manager, the largest in the world, has also begun to integrate A.I. algorithms into its investment advisory services. Source

A.I. Machine Learning: What is it?

Study by the Royal Academy: only 9% know what machine learning is  


So, what is machine learning, anyway? Here is a quick history and the basics:


The man credited with developing early machine learning and coining the term - in 1959, was Arthur Samuel, an electrical engineer, and scientist from Kansas, who worked for Bell Labs and IBM before becoming a professor at Standford in the sixties.

He described machine learning as "a computer science that gives computers the ability to learn without being explicitly programmed."    

He developed the basics of machine learning by writing a program that could play checkers. Source

Basic explanation of machine learning


At its most basic level, machine learning is software systems set up by programmers that sift through information inputs via three main logic gates, often referred to as neural networks. The programmer defines the desired outcome with an output model.

The learning occurs when data is run through that system over and over again until the desired outcome is achieved at an acceptable percentage. The higher volumes of data pumped in and the more diverse the variety of information, the quicker and more sophisticated the learning becomes. 

Simple example: training to recognize single digit numbers handwritten


A simple example of this could be to teach a computer to recognize a handwritten single digit number in a black and white image. Let's say the number is 8. The images appear to the computer as lighted pixels that take the actual shape of single digit numbers. 

The computer needs to know what the image of an 8 looks like. That image becomes the output or primary model that all other single digits can't be in order for the computer to accomplish its goal.


Again, lighted pixels in a black and white image glow to represent the shapes of the numbers. (Before that the computer has to be trained to be able to distinguish between glowing or lighted pixels and unlighted or non-glowing ones).

The programmer then shows the computer black and white images with glowing pixels that represent the shapes of all single digit numbers including 8. So, it sees a 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9, and 0 inputted through its neural network system. This is done over and over again.   

It compares the images of all single digit numbers to the output image of an 8 and disregards the images that don't match. The images are fed into the system over and over until it can distinguish between all other images of single digit numbers and the image of an 8 with a high rate of accuracy. From that point forward that particular software system can always recognize a handwritten image of the number 8. The same can be applied to millions of different models that can increase machine learning's capabilities across many sectors of information processing. Source

A recent academic paper published by Chinese researchers looking into the IQs of A.I. systems found some are smarter than others.

Measuring all of the major tech players around the world, the team discovered Google earns valedictorian honors with an IQ of  47.28. Chinese search engine Baidu was second with a score 32.92, followed by Microsoft Bing 31.98. In last is Microsoft Siri with a tally of 23.94.

The average IQ of an American human is around 100 give or take five points. Google's A.I. IQ has doubled since 2014. So, by that measure, expect that by 2020 artificial intelligence will be as smart as the average American human. However, these systems will still lack emotion and creativity, so no need to panic just yet. Article     

GM's Rapid Progress Revs Driverless Cars

Logging thousands of miles in San Francisco advances GM's timeline


GM paid a pretty penny for self-driving tech startup Cruise Automation - north of a billion dollars, and it looks like it will pay off quicker than expected, says GM. When GM purchased the start-up a year ago, it did so to catch up to Google's driverless car program before it was too late. 

But it appears GM can breathe a sigh of relief as it has developed its program that it says is ready to go - right under the noses of Google in the streets of San Fran. Google's Waymo has tested in Phoenix and plans on operating a ride-sharing service there, exclusively, to get the ball rolling.  

GM and Cruise Automation, on the other hand, tested in San Francisco, a city with some of the most challenging driving conditions in the US, if not the world. GM's system has seen everything imaginable driving in the golden gate city and experienced a high rate of the unexpected - key external elements to train neural networks and sensory systems.

"We are making rapid progress toward taking the driver out of the car," said Kyle Vogt, CEO and founder of Cruise Automation.


"Driving in San Francisco is almost nothing like driving in the suburbs, or other places where self-driving cars are tested," said Vogt.



In a note upgrading GM, analyst Rod Lache wrote, "GM's AV's will be ready for commercial deployment, without human drivers, much sooner than widely expected (within quarters, not years)." Article


  



Penn State A.I. Can Spot Plant Disease

Researchers at Penn State University and the International Institute for Tropical Agriculture in Tanzania have trained a neural network running on a smartphone to spot cassava disease with 93% accuracy.
Why it matters: Diseases and pests threaten cassava, a root vegetable that is critical for food security in sub-Saharan Africa, and can lead to losses of over a $1.2 billion each year.
The vision: "In the same way we have personalized medicine, I think we can have personalized agriculture on scale for hundreds of millions of people in real time," Penn State's David Hughes told Wired. He envisions farmers and gardeners using artificial intelligence to help them diagnose their crops.
How it works: Neural networks are typically trained with millions of images. Instead of starting from scratch, the researchers took advantage of something called transfer learning in which an existing network is retrained with new data. In this case, they used 2,756 images of cassava leaves with tell-tale signs of disease.

The cassava: the toxic potato of the tropics 

The cassava is a root plant grown in tropical environments and is called a cassava in Africa and yuca in South America, though they are different varieties. It is a source of carbohydrates and a staple in the diets of Sub Saharan Africans, much like the potato is in the US. 
It must be carefully prepared because the more bitter varieties emit toxins that can be lethal. Often these varieties are avoided but will be eaten during times of scarcity and are sometimes preferred as a way to ward of animal and human theft from food supplies. Source  

It Starts: A.I. Automation Take Cashier Jobs in Fast Food

A fast-food restaurant chain's one restaurant on New York's lower east side will have most of its service jobs automated. This Monday it will go completely cashless with patrons only allowed to purchase with phone apps or through a kiosk.  

That eliminates cashier jobs, a source for many jobs for young people, retirees, not to mention those who make a career in fast food. It is only one restaurant and one chain but multiply that millions of times and go across the US and the picture of the impact it will have can be understood.

Human hospitality will be on hand to guide customers through the process while getting paid $15.00 an hour. Cooks will be paid the same wage but how long until both of these become automated? Article 

Currently, there are 3.85 million fast-food workers in America, a number that has risen steadily, but by only a small percentage over the last ten years.

Fast food restaurants employ on average 17 workers per store and the fast food industry spends approximately 50 billion per year on wages. Overall industry revenue from sales per year is around 200 million.

Best Looking Uniforms in the NFL?

Slow day in AI and robots lets talk about NFL uniforms!


Here are Impact A.I.'s vote for ten best looking uniforms and why


Forget the controversy surrounding the NFL right now. If the players don't come to heel and stand for the country that made them millionaires, they can always be replaced. Think not? Remember the 1987 NFL strike? I couldn't tell the difference in play from the scabs and the regulars.

But something that can never be replaced in the NFL? Who have the hottest cheerleaders? Well yeah, that is one. But more importantly than that is who has the best looking uniforms. As of now, these are the top ten best uniforms in the league, according to Impact A.I.

In alphabetical order: 


Cincinnati Bengals 


After many years of assaulting audience’s eyes with their original bland uniforms, the Cincinnati Bengals made a big leap forward a long while back with their current striking design. The helmet design is what stands out. Taking on the body stripes of a real Bengal tiger in their uniform, with their natural shape and flow, the new helmet design was and is something original. It also makes a clean, clear connection to the Bengal name. And, it is very expressive which is fitting to the sport of football’s ethos of power, speed, and aggression. The striped motif is picked up in the jersey around the shoulders and on the sides of the pants, bringing everything together in a nice balance that is exciting to look at.    

Denver Broncos


The original Broncos uniforms were actually pretty good with a combination of a distinct and unique tone of blue and orangish red. But like a lot of NFL uniforms, they probably were a little dated. However, their new uniform design was so good that other teams have followed suit and copied some of its aspects. Most notably, the thick, swooping stripe that adorns the side of the pants and extends up to the jersey. With the numerous straight stripes found on the pants on nearly all of NFL’s uniforms, this new style the Broncos introduced has pushed design forward in the league. The redesigned horse logo is larger than before and fills the side of the Broncos helmet with the wild and erratic energy of nature. Nice.       

Dallas Cowboys


What makes the Cowboys uniforms better than most in the league? First, it has to be their clean and strong overall presentation. The simple deep blue star outlined in white in the center of the helmet is classic. And those unique silver, slightly blue colored pants, with the dark blue and white stripes, are also classic. The Cowboy uniform is like a leather jacket or pair of blue jeans. Distinctly and recognizably American and probably not likely to go out of style.   

Miami Dolphins


The Dolphins made subtle changes to their uniforms a few years ago. But with the new design, they pulled off something very difficult. They took the design already in place and found ways to greatly enhance it. Nothing drastic changed but somehow the new appearance is noticeably improved. They brightened the overall look, slightly altering the already unique and attractive Caribbean blue in the jersey and pants. The stripes on the pants and helmet changed from thin blue, orange, and white to one thick blue stripe accented with orange and what looks like a dark blue trim. The Dolphin logo in the helmet changed as well and for the better. The Dolphin is larger and is flying through the fire hoop more assertively. The new look is bolder, fresher, and maybe my favorite in the league.   

San Franciso 49ers


The 49ers uniform appeal is very similar to that of the Cowboys. It is a classic look and has terrific colors that are unique. The contrast of the muddy gold and the rich, bright red, and adding a touch of white trim, make these uniforms a standout in the league. It is a look that is clean and uncluttered. The name of the team is great as well as it denotes the historical event of the gold rush era of San Francisco. Using the gold, along with a passionate red, both connect the look with the energy of competition, while tying it to the unique and bold history of an America city.    

New York Giants


Going back to their uniforms of the ‘60’s and ‘70’s as the New York Giants have recently done, was a step in the right direction. It seems sometimes, things are just done right the first time. The Giant’s uniforms of the 80’s, 90’s, and early 2000’s were generic, bland and uninspiring. Mercifully, they put them out of commission. But instead of coming up with a totally new uniform and blowing it again, someone had the good sense to look to the past for their inspiration. Not sure what it is about the new-old Giants uniforms, but I like them.

Jacksonville Jaguars


Well, if you can’t win much at least you can look good while playing. Like the Bengals during their change to the tiger stripe helmets, the Jaguars upgraded their uniforms in one big bound. Maybe it is cat thing. I don’t know. The Jaguar uniforms are the least conservative in the league by a long shot, though that is not saying much. But hey, they do look good. Call them forward or edgy, flashy or whatever. They simply look better than most teams and the bland boys of the league – Colts, Lions, Texans should take note.

Oakland Raiders


Well, what can you say about the Raider’s uniforms? Are the Raiders in Oakland or LA? I don’t even know. But, anyway, where ever they are, they are looking like the ultimate football badasses. Even if it doesn’t translate to wins anymore. With death black, saber silver, and a no-frills, direct uniform style, the Raiders bestowed upon the Christian world a classic look that appears as if it were designed in hell itself. Satan created two things. Rock and Roll music and the Oakland Raiders uniforms.    

Seattle Seahawks


Not a menacing look, but how scary is a Seahawk other than to a fish – if a Seahawk actually is a real thing. But never mind, what the Seahawk uniform lacks in sending death signals to the enemy, it makes up for in style and taste. Possibly a reflection of the progressive Northwest and the city of Seattle, the Seahawk uniforms are modern and sharp with a tasteful use of detail. The switch to purple helmets and pants help as well. The use of a day glow green adds boldness and color. And the smaller design cues found on the jersey through the shoulders are well balanced, modern, and appealing. An overall, nice, athletic look.    

Pittsburgh Steelers


Another classic look, these uniforms just look tough. As the name suggests, these uniforms reflect the hardscrabble culture of Pittsburgh’s past, as a broad-shouldered, unpretentious, factory steel town. But these uniforms are a good design besides that. When these uniforms rolled out, they were unlike any other uniform design in the league. Most uniforms had one or several thin stripes on the sides of pants. The Steelers went with a single stripe on the sides of their pants as thick as they could get it. And made it black – the color of kickass. The Steeler helmet with its yellow, blue, and red spark like symbols arranged within a white circle deliver something truly original, almost esoteric. However, the Steelers aren’t about to lavish our eyes with too much. That wouldn’t be frugal. They place the logo on only one side of the helmet – those beautiful bastards!

Even 35 years after the release of the original Blade Runner, Ridley Scott’s future feels like an invention modern cinema is still trying to catch up to. Other movies’ notions of nuclear-blasted dystopias or whiz-bang Jetsons kitsch seem to pale next to the haunting, soulful specificity of his vision: the Fritz Lang-meets-’40s-noir metropolis; the paranoid-android flair; the deeply un-sci-fi moments of melancholy. It was enough in some scenes just to watch the smoke curl from Sean Young’s cigarette, or follow the dust drifting through a bleached-white sunbeam.

Not that style substituted for plot — namely, the enigmatic tale, loosely adapted from a Philip K. Dick novel, of four genetically engineered humans, known as replicants, on the run from Harrison Ford’s titular hunter in an apocalyptic Los Angeles circa 2019. The big reveal (or was it?) that Ford’s Rick Deckard may also be a replicant landed in an era long before internet spoilers and subreddit deep dives. Three-plus decades later, its sequel arrives in a cone of secrecy so fiercely guarded that unwise reviewers could meet a bottle of chloroform in a dark alley just for disclosing what happens in the first five minutes. Suffice it to say that Ryan Gosling’s stoic Officer K has picked up the badge approximately where Deckard left it, and that 2049 doesn’t look all that different, aside from the obvious improvements in high-def technology.

The director’s torch has also been passed, to French-Canadian Denis Villeneuve (SicarioArrival), who faithfully retains Scott’s dusky golds and grays and retro ’80s pastiche (K’s official police vehicle is a steel-colored DeLorean straight out of Doc Brown’s garage; the LAPD computers look like standard-issue Eastern-bloc IBMs, with a few necessary upgrades). K’s boss, played with brisk, ruthlessly tailored hauteur by Robin Wright, sends him to a remote protein farm to hunt down possible replicant Sapper (Dave Bautista, a human Humvee in coveralls and stubble). There’s more than wriggling grubs beneath the neat rows on his property — a discovery that eventually leads K to the mad blind genius Niander Wallace (a bearded and robed Jared Leto, preening like a fashion-model monk with cataracts), Wallace’s watchful assistant Luv (Sylvia Hoeks), the outer limits of both the city and his psyche, and ultimately, to Deckard himself.

Villeneuve, one of the few filmmakers working today for whom the word auteur doesn’t sound like an unearned affectation, may have fallen a little too in love with his own creation; at two hours and 40 minutes, aesthetic shock and awe eventually outpace the narrative. But how could he not, when nearly every impeccably composed shot — a surreal six-handed love scene; a shimmering hologram of Elvis, hip-swiveling into eternity; a “newborn” replicant, slick with amniotic goo — feels like such a ravishing visual feast? Even when its emotions risk running as cool as its palette, 2049 reaches for, and finds, something remarkable: the elevation of mainstream moviemaking to high art. A–

Car makers wait as Congress hesitates on driverless vehicles

This summer, Audi held an elaborate media event in Spain to celebrate a new sedan that would allow drivers to let go of the wheel and pedal while in traffic jams and pay attention to something else.
The driverless technology heralded a new era for mainstream auto makers in their pursuit to create fully autonomous vehicles. But the rollout by Volkswagen AG’s luxury unit—with production for the 
U.S. originally planned to begin this year—is now uncertain, as the car maker continues to wait for Congress to pass legislation paving the way for autonomous vehicles.
“It’s not a matter of needing permission, it’s more a matter of wanting to introduce the car when we know what the ground rules are,” said Brad Stertz, Audi’s director of government affairs, who acknowledged a shift in timing.
Audi’s conundrum reflects the challenge for auto makers as they plunge into an awkward phase of development years before fully driverless cars are ready: how exactly to pass control back and forth between driver and machine.
Congress is still deliberating how to establish rules governing driverless cars, for now leaving it to a patchwork of state laws. Last week, senators said they reached a bipartisan deal on a draft of a bill that would help speed development, but the outcome is uncertain.
“This legislation proposes common sense changes in law to keep pace with advances in self-driving technology,” Sen. John Thune, the Republican chairman of the commerce committee, said in a statement when announcing the deal.
Some developers, such as Waymo, the driverless-car unit of Google parent Alphabet Inc.,are planning to skip the interim step, convinced there isn’t a reliable way to hand off the wheel. Others are devising semiautonomous vehicles that rely on humans when driving conditions exceed the computer’s abilities.
General Motors Co. GM -0.49% is marketing the new Cadillac CT6 sedan, due out this fall, which lets drivers go hands-free on the highway—but the car also features eye-tracking technology that forces the driver to look at the road or the robot pilot will disengage. Toyota Motor Corp. TM -0.36% has been touting the redesigned Lexus LS sedan that automatically can swerve to avoid pedestrians, but drivers must keep their hands on the wheel.
The disparate approaches from some of the world’s largest auto makers highlight the intense competition to be among the first to market with technology many believe will upend the industry. Tesla Inc.’s introduction of a semiautonomous system called Autopilot in 2014 has helped spearhead development.
But the slew of semiautonomous driving technology is arriving as the National Transportation Safety Board raises concerns in the wake of an investigation into last year’s fatal Tesla Model S crash that found Autopilot lacked proper safeguards to prevent misuse. The NTSB warned that semiautonomous features such as Autopilot could lull drivers into a false sense of security.
Federal investigators estimated the Tesla driver had at least 10 seconds to take control of the sedan before hitting a truck crossing the highway, but he had an “overreliance on automation.”
Following the crash, Tesla changed the software to require drivers to keep their hands on the wheel more often and urged drivers to remain attentive. Tesla contends Autopilot is safer than a human driver without the aide.
Research has shown it takes most drivers two to three seconds—perhaps longer if they are occupied—to take back control of an automated car. “We have concerns that drivers may give over too much control and take away some of their own attention from driving,” said David Zuby, head of research for the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.
Those same concerns led Waymo to abandon efforts to create a semiautonomous system and focus instead on developing fully driverless vehicles. As driver-assist technology improves, “and it’s still incumbent on the human to pay attention, it’s going to be harder and harder for us humans because we’re so imperfect,” Waymo Chief Executive John Krafcik said.
GM’s Cadillac emphasizes its new auto-driving system, Super Cruise, keeps humans engaged. Designed to activate with the a push of a button on most highways in the U.S. and Canada, the system takes over steering, acceleration and braking.
To ensure the driver fixates on the road, an infrared camera mounted on the steering column tracks the eyes. A solid green light atop the steering wheel begins blinking if the driver looks away for about four seconds. After another five seconds, the light flashes red, and the system beeps or vibrates the driver’s seat.
At that point, the car stays centered but begins to coast. The radio volume is lowered, and an automated voice tells the driver to “take control.” Continued inaction slows the car to a stop. The process is meant to “train” the driver to stay engaged, said Pam Fletcher, GM’s top engineer for autonomous systems.
Audi goes one step further, saying its cameras and sensors will allow the driver to turn their attention to “things like answer their email, write text messages…or plan for their vacation.” The Traffic Jam Pilot works only under about 40 miles an hour on a road with a barrier between oncoming lanes.
After traffic frees up, the car warns the driver for 10 seconds before handing over control, coming to a gradual stop if nothing happens. Audi plans to integrate video displays in the center dashboard that can alert the driver.
Audi now says that gradual production of the Traffic Jam Pilot will begin next year, with timing dependent upon government approvals, and that the company is aiming for the feature to reach the U.S. by the fall of 2018—though it is still debating whether it will begin production of the system without knowing if it will be sold.
“We don’t want to have a system built up and locked in and ready to go out on dealership showrooms if there’s going to be a change,” Audi’s Mr. Stertz said.
