Company unveils computer that makes driveless vehicles possible
Computer maker Nvidia has a ticket to ride
Nvidia announced today that it has a computer capable of making any type of vehicle fully autonomous. It says it is the world's first artificially intelligent computer made for such purposes. Many groups are interested in the technology but one, package deliverer DHL is already planning on implementation.
The trick has been to get the A.I. software, GPU, and other components, small and light enough to ride inside the vehicle's engine rooms. The Nvidia is the size of a license plate, the company says. It will be able to perform level 5 driving - which means everything, and vehicles with their computer will require no human input at all.
It is a major breakthrough in autonomous vehicles, one that the world has basically been waiting for. Driverless systems being tested with Google, Tesla, and GM are not yet capable of the top level. Tesla has the hardware for level 5, having already built into their cars since last year, but lacks the software to get to there just yet.
Vehicles with the Nvidia system would have to be outfitted with a host of sensors, vision cameras, GPS, radar, and lidar. Source
